LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -Â The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference(PSAC) released its football end of the year awards on Wednesday afternoon and West Chester (8-3, 6-1 PSAC) placed 13 athletes on the All-PSAC East first and second team squads while
Jarel Elder (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) captured Offensive Player of the Year honors with
Tyler Morrissey (Springfield, Pa./Springfield-Delco) was named Defensive Player of the Year.
Elder also earned a spot on first team All-PSAC East for his efforts in 2017 as he has rushed for a total of 1061 yards overall averaging better than five yards per carry and 15 touchdowns on the year. Elder has also caught the ball out of the backfield 20 times this season for a total of 292 yards and one touchdown on the season. He has also been the lead kick returner in 2017 as he has returned 21 kicks for a total 444 yards an average of 21.1 yards per return.
Elder is the first Golden Ram to take home Offensive Player of the Year honors since QB Sean McCartney did it in the 2014 season.
Joining Elder on the First Team on the offensive side of the ball is G
Frank Tranzilli (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and wide receiver
Tyler Karpinski (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township).
Karpinski had an impressive year as he was the leading receiver for the Golden Rams in 2017 registering 51 receptions for 742 yards giving him an average of 14.5 yards per catch and six touchdowns on the year.
Aside from his Defensive Athlete of the Year honors Morrissey also took home First team All-PSAC east defense honors. Morrissey led the team in tackles with 112 on the season and he also tied for the team lead in tackles for loss with 12 on the season for a total of 34 yards. Six of these 12 tackles for loss where in the form of sacks which accounted for 28 of the 34 yards. Aside from this he registered one pass breakup, five QB hurries, and recovered one fumble on the year.
Morrissey is the first Golden Ram to be named Defensive Player of the year since Andrew Cohen was honored at the end of the 2015 season.
Joining him on the first team was George Shipp who accounted for 46 total tackles, 12 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks on the year. Shipp broke up two passes and tallied five QB hurries. He has also forced one fumble and recovered one fumble for a gain of two yards.
The final first teamer for West Chester was punter
Brendan Paulison (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) who had a great year punting the ball as he punted 51 times for 2231 yards with an average of 43.7 yards per punt. His longest punt on the year was 66 yards and he forced four touchbacks, and 13 fair catches. 14 of his punts went more than 50 yards and 18 of his punts were downed inside the 20 yard line including a pivotal punt against East Stroudsburg which backed the Warriors into a corner in the final moments of the game.
Rasheem James (Philadelphia, Pa./Ben Franklin) received second team All-PSAC honors thanks to his impressive freshman campaign. James had 38 receptions on the year for a total of 607 yards and five touchdowns including a game winning 85 yard touchdown against PSAC-East rival Kutztown earlier in the season.
Andrew Cheggia (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) joined James on the second team after a strong sophomore season. Cheggia went 8-10 on field goals and he went 1-1 on kicks from over 40 yards and 2-2 on kicks between 30-39 yards. His long on the year was 41 yards which he hit late in the game in the win over Shippensburg to help propel West Chester to what proved to be a crucial victory.
On the defensive second team West Chester continued to rack up the awards as
Josh Ganzelli (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East), Diquan Gilbert(Philadelphia, Pa./Comm Tech), Kevin Duggan (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West),Shaq James (Philadelphia, Pa./West Catholic) , and Jarey Elder (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) were all honored for their efforts on the defensive side of the ball in 2017.
Ganzelli had a strong year on the Defensive Line as he registered 25 tackles, five tackles for loss, and two sacks on the year. Fellow Defensive lineman Gilbert has a good year in his own right as he recorded 32 tackles including 11.5 tackles for loss, and a team high eight sacks. Â Gilbert also broke up three passes and hurried the QB six times while also forcing one fumble on the season effectively disrupting opponent's backfields all season long.
Duggan registered 44 tackles on the year including one sack and one tackle for loss while also recovering one fumble. Duggan also broke up one pass and forced two QB hurries on the season. On top of this he also came away with one interception for a gain of 31 yards.
James registered 44 tackles, while also breaking up 10 passes and coming away with team high three interceptions including a crucial interception opposite rival Ship.
The younger of the Elder brothers wreaked havoc all around the field as he had 54 tackles, including 4.5 tackles for loss. Elder also broke up three passes and came away with two interceptions for a total of 40 yards. Elder was also the lead Punt return man returning 18 punts for 149 yards and an average of 8.3 yards per return.
West Chester also qualified for the NCAA tournament which will begin on Saturday afternoon when they travel to PSAC rival Shippensburg for a noon kickoff.
