West Chester Baseball Suffers First Defeat At PSAC Tournament

Box Score

BUTLER, Pa. - Bill Ford (Parkside, Pa./Malvern Prep) hit a two-run home run, but West Chester University could not come all the way back from a pair of four-run deficits, as Seton Hill University staved off elimination for the second time of the day Tuesday and downed the Golden Rams, 6-4, in one PSAC semifinal contest at Kelly Automotive Park.

West Chester (34-12) will face Seton Hill (39-15) again on Wednesday with the winner advancing to the PSAC Championship Game.

Ford's two-run shot, his fifth of the season, cut a 6-2 lead to 6-4 in the top of the eighth inning. However, that was as close as the Golden Rams would get. Nick Bateman (Aston, Pa./Malvern) hit a two-run single in the seventh that put West Chester on the board. However, the Golden Griffins had already staked themselves to a 4-0 lead off WCU starter Andrew Gernert (Lenhartsville, Pa./Kutztown).

Gernert (8-1) dropped his first decision of the year. He surrendered four runs, three of them earned, on nine hits in 5.2 innings of work. Seton Hill starter Tyler Moder (6-2) kept West Chester's bats quiet until he exited in the seventh following Bateman's two-run single.

Game time for West Chester's rematch with Seton Hill on Wednesday is to be determined. Millersville is playing Mercyhurst in the other PSAC Semifinal. The Marauders are looking to advance to Wednesday's championship game as the only undefeated club left in the tournament. The Lakers are hoping to force a rematch with the Marauders, much like Seton Hill did with West Chester today.
