Purple Tops Gold In Spring Game By A Touchdown, 26-20

 

WEST CHESTER, Pa. –  Jr., quarterback Pat Moriarty (Gladwyne, Pa. / Harriton) completed 12 of his 16 pass attempts for 269 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Purple team past the Gold squad 26-20 in the tenth annual West Chester Golden Rams spring football game since 2007 inside John A. Farrell Stadium Saturday afternoon.
 
 The purple squad took a seven-point lead into half time (13-6). Gold's defense was able to shut them out in the third quarter and give the offense a chance to score eight points to take the lead up two heading into the final quarter. Purple regained the advantage, putting up 13 points to secure the win.
 
Jarel Elder (Allentown, Pa. / Parkland) and Anthony Brown (Ephrata / Conestoga Valley) split the carries for the Purple team. Elder rushed eight times for 27 yard and a touchdown, while Brown recorded 35 yards and a touchdown on five attempts.
 
Tyler Karpinski (Lancaster, Pa. / Manheim Township) led the way for the receiving core registering a team-high six catches for 147 yards, including two touchdowns. Shannon Mayer (Norristown, Pa. / Norristown) caught two passes for 93 yards and Shahaid Smith (Crum Lynne / Ridley) took in completions for 43 yards.
 
Gold's starting quarterback Alec Werner (Harrisburg, Pa. / Bishop McDevitt) went 21-for-37 for 224 yards, to with a rushing touchdown and an interception. Dual threat Eerin Young (Philadelphia, Pa. / Imhotep Charter) grabbed a game-high 10 catches for 169 yards, while rushing three times for only seven.
 
Sophomore Mark Dukes (Pottstown, Pa. / Pottsgrove) carried the seven times for 34 yards and two touchdowns. Jordan Banks (Harrisburg, Pa. / Susquehanna Twp.) had 46 yards receiving yards on three targets.  
 
On defense, Purple's defensive end Ch'aim Smith (York, Pa. / York Suburban) led the team in tackles and sacks with six takedowns and two sacks on the quarterback. Jaishan Thornton (Haverford, Pa. / Haverford) had three tackles and intercepted the ball in the first half. Sophomore Ryan Pannella (Phoenixville, Pa. /Phoenixville) made four tackles and took advantage for the second interception on the day for the Purple teams defensive unti.
 
Golds defense was led by senior Ralph Reeves (North Wales, Pa. / North Penn) with five tackles, while Matt Sharp (Rayleigh, Great Britain / London Fire) and Steven Denby (Philadelphia, Pa. / Imhotep) each committed a sack.
 
 West Chester kicks off its 2016 season with road-game against Bentley on Sept. 3rd before coming home to take on the defending Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Champions Slippery Rock on Sept. 10th as the team will rotate home-and-away games every single week during the regular season.
