LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – For the second consecutive season, 12 different members of West Chester's squad received All-PSAC honors for their contributions in 2016, which was announced by that same organization this morning.
West Chester (8-3, 6-1 PSAC) finished second in the PSAC East, behind Kutztown who finished with an undefeated record (7-0) in conference play.
Five members receiving an all-league nod, including
Jarel Elder (Allentown, Pa. / Parkland),
Doug Gilbert (Mount Laurel, N.J. / Lenape),
Tyler Drob (Cherry Hill, N.J. / Cherry Hill East),
Tyler Karpinski (Lancaster, Pa. / Manheim Township), and
Brendan Paulison (Milford, Pa. / Delaware Valley).
Leading the squad in rushing this season was Elder, who eclipsed over a 1,000 yards on the season in the regular season finale against Clarion. The junior produced 1,013 yards and 11 touchdowns for the Golden Rams. Additionally, the back chipped in 184 yards of receiving.
Clearing the way for Elder upfront were Gilbert and Drob. Both received PSAC first team for the second consecutive season. Also on the line providing an impact was
Vince Lostracco (Philadelphia, Pa. / Father Judge), who snagged second-team offense honors.
The trio helped West Chester manage to be fourth in the conference in total points at 395.
The Golden Rams' offense ranked fourth in the conference in rushing (2,192 yards) and fifth in passing (3,093 yards). Overall, this offense generated 480.5 yards per game, including nearly five touchdowns per contest.
Through the air, Karpinski provided a team-high 798 yards. In a loss to Edinboro, the junior managed nine receptions for 178 yards and a Golden Ram touchdown. In total, he produced eight touchdowns which tied teammate Jordan Banks for the lead.
West Chester utilized two different quarterbacks, but still captured 281 yards through the air per contest. Karpinski was a featured player this season and will look to replicate that success in his senior campaign.
As a place kicker, Paulison grabbed first-team honors as well. Paulison kicked off 56 times for a total of 3,214 yards and 15 touchbacks. In terms of field goals, he was 8-15 with a long of 45 yards. The Milford native made six field goals from within 30 yards, five within 40, and a total of 4 inside 50.
The sophomore also made second-team defense for punting, punting the ball 43 times for 1,604 yards. Paulison pinned teams within the 20-yard line 14 times and booted it 50 plus yards on three separate occasions.
Defensively, the Golden Rams landed three players apiece on first and second-team honors.
Receiving a first-team nod for the second consecutive season was junior
Josh Ganzelli (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown East). On the defensive front, Ganzelli clogged running lanes to halt the oppositions' rushing attack. Ganzelli accumulated 44 total tackles with 12 being solo tackles. Additionally, he was second on the squad with a pair of sacks.
A pair of players in the secondary receiving first-team includes sophomore
Nydair Rouse (Philadelphia, Pa. / Simon Gratz) and senior
Kevin Malone (Philadelphia, Pa. / West Catholic).
Both Rouse and Malone posted three interceptions apiece this season.
Rouse returned all three interceptions to the house, which is the second most in a single-season in school history behind Jim Pribula. One of the interceptions for a touchdown came from 35-yards out in the season opener to lift the Golden Rams in the fourth quarter to beat non-league opponent Bentley.
This is Malone's second time earning the honor after being named first-team last season. The senior managed to return one interception for a touchdown from 85-yards out in the regular season finale against Clarion. The senior captain also accounted for 21 total tackles.
The last trio of players were selected on the second-team for the Golden Rams.
Sophomore
Ch'aim Smith (York, Pa. / York Suburban) was a force on the defensive line, leading the team with 57 tackles (Solo 24, Assist 33) and 6 sacks. Smith also chipped in with 11 tackles for loss.
Junior linebacker
Kevin Duggan (Chalfont, Pa. / Central Bucks West) was right behind Smith with 53 (Solo 27, Assist 26) tackles in 2016. Both helped hold opponents to only 18.09 points per game.
On special teams,
Anthony Brown (Ephrata, Pa. / Conestoga Valley) was featured as the kick and punt return specialist. He was given a second-team nod for his efforts. In 12 kick returns, the junior totaled 259 yards for a 21.58 average. For punt returns, Brown returned the ball 22 times and managed a 9.05 average.
