INDIANPOLIS, Ind. – Former West Chester University cornerback
Al-Hajj Shabazz (Philadelphia, Pa./Bartram) has been signed by the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent.
After winning the starting job in his junior year, Shabazz helped West Chester move up in Division II ranks. The team would go a combined 24-4 in his final two seasons and win back-to-back ECAC team of the year honors.
The John Bartram product played in 47 games, made 151 total career tackles, and had 10 interceptions, bringing back two for a touchdown in his career as a Golden Ram. His statistics in his final year put him in third place overall for total passes defended with 16, including five interceptions, good for third in the conference. He also finished seventh in the PSAC with 11 breakups and helped launch the Golden Rams to the Top-10 in interceptions, combining for 12. His16 passes defended in 2014 stands in the PSAC single-season record book for ninth all time.
For his effort on the field, the starting corner gained many awards throughout the 2013 and 2014 seasons. He reached All-America status by D2football.com in his senior year while earning All-America status by the
Don Hansen FB Gazette in back-to-back years. Shabazz also was named to the All-Super Region 1 squad by Daktronics Inc., in both years. It all rounded out with consecutive All-ECAC and All-PSAC first-team honors, leading to a 2014 finalist for the Cliff Harris Award and an invitation to the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl on his road to the NFL.
Hajj-Shabazz will report to the team on Thursday and get set to compete in spring mini-camp later in May.
