Moriarty's Career Day Propels West Chester To 44-14 Win Over Kutztown

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Pat Moriarty (Gladwyne, Pa./Harriton) threw for a career-high 437 yards and five touchdowns to lead West Chester to a 44-14 victory over visiting Kutztown Saturday afternoon at John A. Farrell Stadium.
 
West Chester (4-2, 3-0 PSAC East) remains one of only two teams left unbeaten in the Easter Division of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference while Kutztown (3-3, 2-1) fell into a tie for third place in the league standings.
 
Moriarty completed 30 of 40 passes without being intercepted for the second straight game. His main target, tight end Tim Brown (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) made eight catches for 99 yards. Tyler Karpinski (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Twp.) caught two TD passes. Brandon Monk (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) rushed 13 times for 67 yards and a score as well.
 
Jim Hurley (Wayne, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) got things started when he snared a screen pass that was deflected and raced 62 yards to pay dirt with 3:52 left in the first quarter. That ignited a 34-point run by the Golden Rams that extended into the second half.
 
West Chester scored three touchdowns in the second quarter. Sophomore TE Bill Ford (Malvern, Pa./Parkridge) caught his first career pass for a 3-yard touchdown. Monk followed up with a 5-yd TD run up the middle, and Shannon Mayer (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) snagged a 5-yard TD strike from Moriarty in traffic with nine seconds left in the first half to open up a 27-0 lead for the Rams by halftime.
 
Kutztown finally answered with 7:37 to play in the third quarter. Sr., WR Kodi Reed caught a 38-yard pass, his first reception of the day, down to the Golden Rams' 6-yard line, and then grabbed a 6-yd TD pass on the next play to make it a 34-7 game.
 
Karpinski, who caught a 17-yd TD pass earlier in the third quarter, registered his second TD of the quarter with 6:35 left in it to push the hosts' lead to 41-7.
 
In the fourth quarter, Kutztown's Tyler Pratt returned a blocked punt 20 yards for a Golden Bears' score. West Chester PK Brendan Paulison (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) added a 23-yard field goal with 6:01 to play to close out the scoring.
 
Ralph Reeves (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) led West Chester's defense with nine tackles.
 
West Chester travels to Shippensburg next Saturday for a 1 p.m. start against the Raiders.
 
NOTES: West Chester's win over Kutztown extended the team's winning streak to four games … West Chester improved to 51-9 all-time against Kutztown with its fourth straight win in the series … the 60 career games between the two Eastern Division rivals is the fourth-most played rivalry in WCU's record books … West Chester's 30 team pass completions is tied for fourth all-time in a game at WCU … the Rams' 437 team passing yards is the sixth-best single-game effort in school history … QB Pat Moriarty completed a career-high 30 passes, tying the fourth-best mark in a single game in school history … only Mike Mitros (three times) and Dave McDonald (once) have completed 30 passes in a single game in school history … his five TD passes was a career high and ties him for sixth on the school's single-game charts … Moriarty's 422 yards of total offense ranks seventh in a single game at WCU and is the most since Sean McCartney's 432 against AIC in the NCAA 1st Round in 2013 … Moriarty set new career highs in seven different offensive categories Saturday … his 437 passing yards is the fifth-best single-game mark in school history and the most since McCartney threw for 444 yards in 2010 … Moriarty has thrown at least three TD passes in each of his last four games … Moriarty has not thrown an interception in his last 82 pass attempts … RB/Ret. Spc. Brandon Monk now ranks second all-time in career kickoff return yards (1,620)and punt return yards (576).
