Al-Hajj Shabazz (Philadelphia, Pa./Bartram) was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division player of the week it was announced by the loop in the first weekly nominations of the football season.

Shabazz blocked a punt, jumped on another blocked punt in the end zone for score and intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter to help lead No. 10 West Chester to a 35-30 season-opening win over New Haven on the road Saturday afternoon.

Shabazz finished with four tackles to go along with his special outing. His interception and blocked punt on consecutive possessions in the fourth quarter were instrumental in the Golden Rams holding onto its 35-30 advantage. He also covered a blocked punt in the end zone two minutes into the second half that gave West Chester a 28-16 lead.
