Five Golden Rams Named All-ECAC; McCartney Co-Offensive Player Of Year

DANBURY, Conn. – West Chester University senior QB Sean McCartney (Doylestown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) was named the Co-Offensive Player of the Year while four other teammates were all named to the 2014 All-ECAC Division II squad it was announced this week.

Derek Schatz (Churchville, Pa./Council Rock South), Tim Brown (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby), Andrew Cohen (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) and Al-Hajj Shabazz (Philadelphia, Pa./Bartram) were also honored by the ECAC this week. Shabazz makes his second appearance on the all-league team.

It marks the second straight season in which a West Chester player has walked away with the offensive player of the year award. Last season, RB Rondell White was honored as the top offensive player in the ECAC.

McCartney led all of NCAA Division II with 42 touchdown passes this season and guided West Chester to an 11-2 overall record and to the second round of the NCAA playoffs. He is ranked among the Division II leaders in 8 out of 10 different offensive categories, after throwing for 3,744 yards and averaging almost 15 yards per completion. He finished fifth in the Harlon Hill Trophy voting as Division II's player of the year and was also selected Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division Offensive Athlete of the Year.

The sixth-year senior ranked sixth in the nation in points responsible for (266) and passing yards (3,744). He ranked seventh in points responsible for per game (20.6) and passing efficiency (163.4). He ranks 11th in passing yards per attempt (8.96) and passing yards per completion (14.98). McCartney also ranks 19th in passing yards per game (288.0).

McCartney broke five single-season school records and two more career records during an illustrious senior campaign. His 3,744 passing yards and 42 passing TDs are both new school records while his 3,669 total yards of offense is a new mark as well. His 59.0 career completion percentage is also the best of any quarterback in school history. McCartney also threw a TD pass in 19 consecutive games, breaking the school record held by WCU's current offensive coordinator and QB coach, Bill Zwaan, Jr.

His 92 career TD passes and his 9,595 career passing yards are both second all-time to Mike Mitros (1996-99). McCartney wound up 28-8 as a starter in 46 career games (36 starts), including 24-4 over the last two campaigns.

Tim Brown put together the most prolific single season for a tight end in school history. The 6-3, 235 lbs., target for McCartney led the Golden Rams in receptions (53), receiving yards (1,059) and touchdown receptions (17). His TD receptions rank third in Division II while his receiving yards are the most by a tight end in Division II this fall. He was previously honored as first team All-PSAC East.

Al-Hajj Shabazz was a repeat first-team selection this season. He led the Golden Rams with five interceptions and 16 passes defensed while also blocking a punt. He ranked seventh on the team in tackles with 39. His five picks are tied for 23rd in Division II this season. In his four-year career, Shabazz registered 10 interceptions and 33 passes defensed. He also made 152 total tackles, 101 of which were solo stops.

Derek Schatz was West Chester's starting center along the offensive line for the past three years. He was named a Philly-SIDA Academic All-Area performer earlier this month while garnering first team All-PSAC East accolades for two straight seasons.

Cohen compiled 65 tackles and led his defense with 20 tackles for a loss, and sacked opponent's quarterbacks 11 times for 65 yards lost, while registering eight quarterback hurries. His 5.5 tackles for a loss against Slippery Rock in the first round of the NCAA II Playoffs is a single-game record for a postseason game and ranks second in any game. Cohen was also previously named All-PSAC East as well as Philly-SIDA Academic All-Area.
