Football Lands 13 on All-League Squad; McCartney Offensive Player Of Year In The Eastern Division

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – No. 17 West Chester (10-1, 8-1 PSAC) enters the First Round of the NCAA II Playoffs this Saturday against Slippery Rock with 13 All-PSAC East performers.

Leading the way for the Golden Rams is senior quarterback Sean McCartney (Doylestown, Pa./Archbishop Wood), who earned first team All-PSAC East honors in addition to being named the PSAC East Offensive Player of the Year. He is the first Golden Rams gridiron member to earn the conference's offensive player of the year award since former WR Mike Washington in 2008.

The Harlon Hill candidate is tied for second in the NCAA with 34 touchdown passes, while also placing seventh in pass efficiency. West Chester's aerial attack has McCartney completing 60 percent of his passes, while throwing five TDs in a game twice this year.

In five games this season McCartney has thrown for over 300 yards, racking up 2,998 passing yards for the season, which ranks 17th in the NCAA. Overall, he is ninth in the NCAA for points responsible. McCartney's performances landed him a pair Eastern Division offensive player of the week honors for his games against Millersville and Kutztown University.

On the ground, junior Brandon Monk (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) ran his way to being an All-PSAC East running back. Monk has amassed 1,758 all-purpose yards this year, averaging out to 159 all-purpose yards per game, which is good enough for 16th in the NCAA for all-purpose yards per game. The junior has rushed for 1,134 yards on the season and nine touchdowns, totaling 11 for the year. In a 35-24 win over East Stroudsburg, Monk gashed the Warriors for a season-high 257 yards. Monk's versatility makes him a unique asset, showing his talents in last week's game against Indiana, Pa., where he scored a touchdown in three different ways.

Junior tight end Tim Brown (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) makes his initial appearance on the league's first team All-PSAC East squad. He is second on team in receptions with 37 and second in receiving yards 679. Brown ranks 11th in the PSAC in receiving yards and leads the PSAC in TD receptions with 12. That leads all tight ends in Division II in TD receptions. He ranks fifth in the NCAA among tight ends in receiving yards and eighth in the NCAA among tight ends in receptions. His 90-yd TD reception is the second longest reception in the PSAC this season.

Nearly West Chester's entire offensive line was honored as senior center Derek Schatz (Churchville, Pa./Council Rock South), classmate James Colivas (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) and sophomore Doug Gilbert (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) were all first team picks while senior Antoine Bland (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz) was a second team selection.

That offensive line helped Monk rush for over 1,000 yards and rack up over 1,700 all-purpose yards while blocking for McCartney, who threw for 3,000 yards and 30 TDs. Schatz is a nominee for the Gene Upshaw Award. He makes all the calls up front for the Golden Rams offensive line and is a big reason that West Chester's offense ranks fourth in the PSAC in total offense and fifth in rushing offense.

Jr., RB Eddie Elliott (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) and Sr., WR Mike Doty (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) were also second-team All-PSAC picks from the Golden Rams. Elliott is second on the Rams in rushing with 463 yards and three rushing TDs. He has also caught 20 passes for 287 yards and another score. Doty leads the squad in pass receptions with 40. He has 611 yards receiving and nine TDs.

Defensively, the Golden Rams landed four players on the squad.

On the first team were a pair of seniors in Ronell Williams (Chester, Pa./Chester) and Al-Hajj Shabazz (Philadephia, Pa./John Bartram). On the defensive front, Andrew Cohen (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) earned his way onto the first-team squad as well.

Williams is the senior middle linebacker who made first team All-PSAC East for the third consecutive year for the Golden Rams.

Despite missing three games to a knee injury, Williams ranked third on the team in tackles. Overall, he is currently fifth all-time in West Chester history with 360 tackles. In addition, he is second on the team with 31 assisted tackles and has one QB hurry. The Chester, Pa., native was named to three preseason All-America squads, while being named the ECAC Defensive Player of the Year and first-team All-Super Region 1 in 2013.To this day, he remains the only sophomore in school history to be an AFCA All-America, being a Little AP All-American in 2012.

In the secondary, Shabazz made a name for himself by leading the PSAC with 15 pass breakups. The Cliff Harris Award nominee made his second consecutive first-team All-PSAC East squad, who intercepted four passes, ranking fifth in the PSAC. Shabazz was the leading vote-getter among DBs in All-PSAC East balloting.

Up front, Cohen clogged running lanes for opposing opponents, leading the team with 13.5 tackles for loss. After receiving All-PSAC East recognition last year, Cohen upped his game and became a presence for the Golden Rams on defense. Cohen's nine sacks ranks first on the team as well, making his presence felt as he anchored the defensive line with 51 tackles.

Being recognized on the second-team was senior defensive lineman Mike Culbreath (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn). Culbreath bounced around between defensive end and linebacker for the Golden Rams during his four-year career. However, he landed on the second team all-league squad in just his first year on the defensive line. His versatility gave West Chester an athletic pass rusher, who can play all over the field. On the season, he is second on the team with four sacks, and a total of 31 tackles and nine tackles for loss.
