LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – West Chester University senior RB
Rondell White was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division Offensive Player of the Week it was announced Sunday by that organization.
Â
White rushed for 173 yards and three touchdowns, adding 87 yards receiving on a team-high eight receptions, leading West Chester to a 32-29 victory on the road over Shippensburg in a battle of divisional unbeaten. White put up 274 all-purpose yards in the game and broke the school's all-time record, which had stood for 23 years. However, his 25-yard reception on 3rd-and-6, down to the Shippensburg 32-yard line, helped keep alive West Chester's game-winning drive.
Â
He accounted for 41 of the team's 52 yards on that winning drive, which culminated in Shawn Leo's 26-yard field goal to win the game with 1.1 seconds left. It marks the second time this season that White has been named athlete of the week. He walked away with the weekly honor in Week One after West Chester opened with a convincing, 45-14 win over then-No. 12 New Haven.
Â
White, who leads Division II in all-purpose yards per game, now has 6,574 career all-purpose yards, which tops the former mark of 6,500 by Derrick Price (1987-90). The local product is also chasing a number of other school records. He set the school's single-season mark for rushing yards last fall with 1,548. He is currently 236 yards away from that mark with three regular-season games left. White also sits 349 yards away from Price's all-time rushing record of 4,008 yards.
Â
White went over 2,000 all-purpose yards in Saturday's win over Shippensburg while eclipsing 100 points in a season with his three touchdowns. He is the first player in school history to amass 2,000-plus all-purpose yards twice in a career while he is just the second player in school history to surpass 100 points in a single season twice as well. Only Kevin Ingram (1998, 1999) had accomplished that previously. Incidentally, White is 67 kickoff return yards away from becoming just the fourth player in school history to reach 1,000 kickoff return yards in a career. With 99 more receiving yards, White will become the first running back in school history to reach 2,000 career reception yardage.
Â
White and the 13th-ranked Golden Rams (8-0, 5-0 PSAC East) travel to cross-county rival Cheyney on Saturday, Nov. 2 for a 12 p.m. kickoff. West Chester will be looking for its first 9-0 start to a season since 1967.
