LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Sixth-ranked West Chester University’s women’s lacrosse squad dropped a PSAC semifinal contest to Bloomsburg, 15-11, at Charlotte E. Smith Field Friday evening.
It marks the first time that West Chester (14-3) has not reached the PSAC Championship Game since 2000 and the first time that the Golden Rams lost a conference playoff game to someone other than Lock Haven since falling to Bloomsburg in the 2003 title game.
Mercyhurst upset top-seeded and host Lock Haven, 10-9, in the other semifinal as both the top two seeds fell on Friday. Mercyhurst will play Bloomsburg on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the 2012 PSAC Women’s Lacrosse Championship Game.
Friday’s game was delayed by severe thunderstorms and lightning 4 hours, 8 minutes in the first half with Bloomsburg holding a 7-3 advantage with 15:45 remaining. In all, it took 4 hours, 53 minutes to complete the first half with the Huskies holding a 9-7 lead.
Bloomsburg outscored West Chester 6-4 in the second half and never trailed the entire game. Samantha King and Sam Mazzie each scored four goals for the Huskies.
Jamie Dolan led the Rams in scoring with five points (2 goals, 3 assists). Tori Dugan and Nicole Pyle each scored a pair of goals. Erin Oczkowski posted a hat trick.
West Chester must wait until Sunday night to find out if its 14-3 record is good enough to gain entry into the 2012 NCAA Division II Women’s Lacrosse Tournament. The Golden Rams were the third seed in the latest NCAA South Region rankings. The top three teams in that ranking are selected to the NCAA Tournament.
