COLLEGE PARK, Md. – West Chester University closed out the second day of the Terrapin Cup with another outstanding performance against the rest of the Division I field at the University of Maryland’s Eppley Recreation Natatorium.
Leah Varvaro turned in a time of 55.83 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly to establish a lifetime best in that event while Lauren Carastro, Dani Dougherty, Kendall Somers and Kristina Ciatto all experienced lifetime bests in the 100 breaststroke. Carastro swam a 1:06.67 in the finals, and Dougherty touched in 1:05.87, Somers in 1:06.04 and Ciatto in 1:07.62 during prelims in the morning session.
They rounded out the highlights on day two at the Terrapin Cup. West Chester has held its own against a predominantly Division I field consisting of host Maryland, North Carolina State, Towson and William & Mary.
From Thursday’s opening session, freshman Alex Walley busted out the No. 2 time in school history in the 500 free while hitting an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 4:55.55. Teammate Codyanne Murtaugh also established a lifetime best in the 500 free with a swim of 5:01.13.
Amelia Buckley swam a personal best in the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:05.37 while Megan Winslow swam a 2:08.27 for a new lifetime best in that same event.
West Chester resumes action Saturday morning at 10 a.m. in preliminary action.
