WEST CHESTER, Pa. – West Chester University opened its 2011 women’s gymnastics campaign with a tremendous effort and a second-place showing in its quad meet held inside Sturzebecker HSC Saturday afternoon.
West Chester scored a 181.450, narrowly being edged by Southern Connecticut State with a 182.275. The Golden Rams topped Ursinus College (176.625) for the first time in over a decade and also downed Springfield College (175.625).
Sophomore Kaley LaFleur was the all-around winner with a combined score of 36.975. She edged teammate Paige Griffin, who was second with a 36.100. Alli Aquila placed fifth in the all-around with a score of 35.725.
Amber Miller was an individual winner in the balance beam with a score of 9.525. LaFleur was third with a 9.400. Three Golden Rams placed in the top five in that event.
West Chester also enjoyed its best performance in over a year on the uneven bars, scoring a 45.175. Griffin was runner-up individually with a 9.375. LaFleur was fifth with a 9.200, and Emily Siegel was seventh with a 9.000.
The Rams’ top event of the afternoon was the vault where they scored a 46.200. LaFleur was seventh with a 9.350.
