MINERAL WELLS, W.VA. – West Chester University’s men’s golf squad opened the fall slate of its 2010-11 schedule in impressive fashion as all five golfers shot a 76 or better to place the Golden Rams one stroke off the leader Indiana (Pa.) after day one of the Burger King/Ohio Valley Invitational held at the Woodridge Plantation Golf Course that was a par-71 playing to 6,830 yards Monday afternoon.
West Chester’s four countable scores added up to an 8-over par, 292, one behind regional power IUP, who leads the team leaderboard with a 291. Charleston’s Alex Carrigan is the individual leader, after carding a 67 in the first round. Golden Rams’ freshman Connor Lefever is second overall with a 70, after his first collegiate round.
Sophomore Griffith Basehore is tied for eighth, signing for a 72, while Doug Brooks handed in a 74 to tie for 16th. Michael Flatley and Michael Ashcraft each shot a 76 to tie for 29th overall.
“I am excited by what I saw from the entire team today,” said third-year head coach Harry Hammond. “The weather was perfect, and the kids adjusted well to the course.”
Clarion was third on the team leaderboard with a 296 as Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) schools claimed the top three spots in the 13-team field made up mostly of schools from the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC). All three PSAC entrants came in under 300 as a team score after round one.
