ERIE, Pa. – West Chester University freshman right-hand pitcher Fred Breidenbach was named to the first team Daktronics, Inc., All-Atlantic Region in a vote conducted by the region’s sports information directors it was announced Thursday afternoon. Bob Stumpo and Joe Wendle were named to the region’s second team squad.
Breidenbach moves on to the national ballot where he will have an opportunity to be named a Daktronics, Inc., All-American. The announcement of the national team is slated for May 21.
Concord University’s Greyson Schram was voted the region’s player of the year while Wheeling Jesuit hurler Noah Mull was voted the region’s pitcher of the year.
Schram collected the regular-season West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference triple crown after posting a .530 batting average, including 18 home runs, and 77 RBI. The senior second baseman helped Concord to a 29-8 overall mark and an appearance in the WVIAC Tournament. He currently ranks among the leaders in several NCAA categories, including batting average (2nd - .508), home runs (6th- 20), RBI (5th – 81) and slugging percentage (1st - .599).
Mull, a product of Wheeling W. Va., capped off a stellar senior season with a 7-1 record and a WVIAC-best 2.09 earned run average. Mull limited opponents to a .194 batting average and ranks second in Division II with 13.02 strikeouts per nine innings. He owns four complete games with a pair of shutouts. The former Wheeling Central HS star has fanned 81 hitters compared to only 39 hits and 21 walks in 56.0 innings pitched. In addition to this postseason honor, Schram and Mull were also named the WVIAC player and pitcher of the year, respectively.
West Chester’s Breidenbach, a first team All-PSAC East selection and Eastern Division freshman of the year, quickly impressed the new coaching staff at WCU and worked his way into a weekend starter in his first year in college, tying the school record for wins in a season with 10. He was 10-2 overall on the year with a 4.05 earned-run average. The freshman threw 73.1 innings and struck out 58 batters, yielding an opponent batting average against of .279. He made 11 starts out of 13 appearances and completed two games.
Breidenbach also registered a save in one of his two relief appearances. He led the conference in wins and ranks fifth nationally in that category. He was victorious in his first eight starts of the season and authored a 6-1 mark against conference opponents as well.
Wendle, a semifinalist for the Tino Martinez Division II player of the year award, was named to the second team All-Atlantic Region squad along with Stumpo. Both were first team All-PSAC East selections within their conference. Wendle is hitting .401 on the season with seven home runs. Stumpo set a school record with 47 career base-runners caught stealing. He has nabbed 16 would-be base-stealers this spring alone.
