West Chester Women's Track Qualifies 19 For PSACs

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - West Chester University's women’s track & field took home nine first-place finishes at the WCU Open Invitational, including 19 PSAC qualifiers, on a gorgeous Friday afternoon at John A. Farrell Stadium.

Sam Smarkola took first place in the 200m dash finishing in 26.79 seconds. Kerri Nash followed Smarkola, finishing fourth with a time of 27.97. Shannon Murphy was sixth (28.42) and Christina Caroulis was eighth (30.29).

Smarkola finished second in the 400m dash, hitting a PSAC qualifying time, crossing the line in 59.69. Melissa Gillen tied Murphy for fourth place, finishing in 1:03.24.

Lyndsey Ratasiewicz won the 800m run with a time of 2:24.30. Mary Gawbill followed Ratasiewicz in second place a time of 2:24.31 while Leigh Gumlock-Silfies was fourth (2:28.01). Both Ratasiewicz and Gawbill notched PSAC qualifying times. Kristina Koutsouros captured first in the 3000m in a time of 10:44.49. Ratasiewicz was second (10:45.38) and Jess Joseph third (10:53.07). All three Golden Rams qualified for the conference meet next month.

Melinda Wentz was first in the 100m hurdles a time of 15.37. Katie Butler followed Wentz in fourth (15.95). Wentz and Butler each qualified for PSACs with their times. Brigid Gallagher was fifth (16.40) and Aimee Sitch was sixth (17.71). Wentz also took first in the 400m hurdles (1:05.65). Lindsay Nygren was second in 1:07.21, Danielle Howell third (1:07.66), Gallagher was fourth (1:09.62). Wentz, Nygren and Howell each qualified for PSACs.

Butler finished first in high jump, clearing 5 feet, 2 1/2 inches. Brigid Harron was second (5-0 1/2) and Andrea Lengal was third with a height of 4-10 1/2. Butler and Harron will be competing at the PSACs as a result of their performances Saturday. Kamber Schrann won pole vault, clearing 10 feet, while hitting a PSAC qualifying height.

Brittany Foye won the triple jump (35-6 3/4). Mackenzie Lauro followed Foye in third place, leaping 35-1. Both hit PSAC marks in the triple jump.

The 4x400 meter relay finished first with a time of 4:11.49. The team consisted of Lauro, Howell, Gawbill, and Nygren.
