CANTON, Ohio - West Chester University's female swimmers take to the C.T. Branin Natatorium Wednesday for Day One of the 2010 NCAA Division II Women's Swimming & Diving Championships. The Golden Rams contingent consists of 10 swimmers as they try to equal or better their fifth-place finish from a year ago.
Drury University has won two of the last three women’s titles and five since 1997. Missouri rival Truman State embarked on a string of six consecutive championships in 2001, but is considered a bit of a long shot to emerge with the crown this year.
Senior Jackie Borkowski will serve a bit of a different role in this year's championships as she will swim two relays, instead of the usual four, and enter into the 200-yard freestyle and the 500 free. Normally a sprinter, Borkowski will try her hand at some of the middle distance events to earn another All-America certificate. She will join teammates Kristen Montello and Danielle Ierley in the 500 where West Chester will try to take three of the top eight spots for the first time in school history.
"I think the women really overachieved a year ago," West Chester head coach Jamie Rudisill said. "But, they should certainly be a top 10 finisher this year again. If they repeat some of their PSAC times, we will do OK."
Erin Fischer is another swimmer that Rudisill is counting on for points at nationals in the butterfly. She will swim both the 100 and 200 fly where the coaching staff believes she will end up on the podium with an All-America certificate, if she can repeat her performance at the PSAC Championships.
Megan Bauer and Jillian Murphy are major contributors to West Chester's relay squads. They will team with Borkowski and Montello in the relay events to make the Golden Rams a strong contender as well.
