2010 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships - Day One Results
CANTON, Ohio – Senior sprinter Jackie Borkowski won an NCAA individual championship in the 50-yard freestyle to highlight West Chester University’s first day in the pool at the 2010 NCAA Division II Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships at the C.T. Branin Natatorium Wednesday evening.
Borkowski placed first in the prelims of the 50-free during the morning session and then repeated that first-place performance at night in the finals to capture the first individual national title in her illustrious college career. She swam a 22.91 in the prelims, but bettered that mark with a 22.87 in the finals.
Borkowski’s individual national championship is the first by a West Chester female swimmer since Kathrin Dumitru won the 200 IM, both the 100 and 200 butterfly, and the 100 breaststroke at the 2007 NCAA Championships.
The first-place ribbon marks Borkowski’s 17th All-America certificate in her illustrious career. The two-time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference swimmer of the year also set a new PSAC mark in the 50 free with her national championship winning time.
The women's 200 medley relay team consisting of Leah Varvaro, Rachael Gale, Erin Fischer and Megan Bauer earned an All-America certificate with an eighth place finish. They clocked a time of 1:46.17.
West Chester is in fourth place overall in the team standings after the first day with 70.5 points. Defending champ Drury is in first place with 156 points while Wayne State is in second with 143. PSAC rival Clarion is third overall with 72 points.
