MECHANICSBURG, Pa. – West Chester University’s men’s swimming team easily closed out its 12th consecutive PSAC Championship Sunday afternoon with another dazzling performance in the water at Cumberland Valley High School. Junior Kenny McCormick was honored as the swimmer of the meet during the awards ceremony.
West Chester captured the school’s 23rd PSAC men’s swimming championship, pulling to within one of Clarion’s conference record of 24 team titles. The Golden Rams amassed 780 points to win the championship. Clarion was second with 599.5. Shippensburg was third with 504.5 points. Edinboro was fourth with 418, and Bloomsburg was fifth (380) and Gannon sixth (285).
McCormick (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) won three individual conference crowns, setting a meet record in the process in two of the three events, and was also part of two conference champion relay teams throughout the championships this weekend.
Sunday, McCormick added the 200-yard butterfly title to his growing trophy case. He timed out in 1 minute, 50.89 seconds, just ahead of teammate David Smoker (1:51.66). McCormick’s first-place effort in the 200 fly was one of only two first place finishes for West Chester on the afternoon. However, the Golden Rams turned in five second-place showings and captured the top two spots in the two events they did win.
Peter Madueno won the 200 breaststroke in 2:07.24. Bud McClernan was second and Joe Watts fourth in that event.
Max Bernardes was second in the 1650 freestyle in 16:12.97. Brendan Magarity was second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:50.91. Brendan Fanslau was second in the 100 free (45.63).
West Chester returns home to train for the NCAA Division II Men’s & Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships next month.
