COLLEGE PARK, Md. – West Chester University’s men’s swimming team posted a pair of runner-up performances, along with three more Top 8 showings, to finish the Terrapin Cup Invitational very strong.
West Chester's men's team placed third overall in the team standings with 525.5 points. Host Maryland walked away with the team title, producing 1,066.5 points. Connecticut was second with 999 points. Villanova placed fourth, right behind West Chester, with 404 points.
The Golden Rams were competing in a field made up mostly of Division I schools, but did not back down from the step up in competition. Host Maryland was most impressive at the three-day meet set up similarly to the NCAA Championship meet in March.
McClernan timed out in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2 minutes, 5.41 seconds while Rhoads finished runner up in the 1650 freestyle in 16:06.80. Tyler Adams placed ninth in the 1650 free (16:36.58) as well.
Kenny McCormick was fifth in the 200 butterfly (1:51.99) and Brendan Magarity was fourth in the 200 backstroke (1:49.32). McCormick, Josh Pauley, Ryan Stahley and Phil Letcavage made up the 400 free relay team that placed sixth in 3:07.39.
West Chester’s diving team will compete at the Rutgers Diving Invitational Sunday. The swim team will not be back in action again until Jan. 8 when the Golden Rams take on Maine and Johns Hopkins in a relay meet in Juno, Fla.
