NEW HAVEN, Conn., - Freshman Tommy Rhoads turned in a pair of lifetime bests in the freestyle sprints to help visiting West Chester University score a 146.5-121.5 victory over regional rival Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon at the Hutchinson Natatorium.

West Chester rebounded from a tri-meet defeat to Division III powers Johns Hopkins and The College of New Jersey with a fine showing Saturday. Rhoads won both the 100-yard freestyle (47.48 seconds) and the 200 free (1 minute, 44.95 seconds) to pace the Golden Rams’ effort on the men’s side. Both times were career bests for the young swimmer.

West Chester captured nine events in all on the day. Senior Max Bernardes won the 500 free in 4:46.18 while Brendan Magarity won the 200 backstroke (1:57.76).

Adam Vance captured the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 267.55.

Kenny McCormick, last week’s male swimmer of the week in the PSAC, touched the wall first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:56.70. Calvin Starosta won the 100 back with a time of 53.68.

The men’s 200 medley relay team of Starosta, Bud McClernan, McCormick and Brendan Fanslau was a winner in 1:37.97.

West Chester returns to the pool next Friday for a 6 p.m. meet at Penn.
