WCU Places 10 Women In Top 3 To Capture Collegeville Classic
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – West Chester put 10 women in the top three as the Golden Rams’ women qualified four additional athletes for the PSAC Championships by winning the 2010 Ursinus Collegeville Classic Friday evening.
West Chester posted 107.5 points, outdistancing Coppin State (106) and Misericordia (70). Last season, the Golden Rams mustered just 65.5 points at the same meet.
Sam Smarkola registered three third-place performances, hitting a PSAC time in both the 200m and 400m races. Smarkola crossed the line in the 200m in 26.94 seconds and 1:00.67 in the 400m. She was also third in the 55m dash in 7.72. Miriam Hughes and Danielle Howard placed sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 200m with times of 27.77 and 27.83.
Melinda Wentz qualified for the PSACs in the 400m with a fifth-place finish in 1:01.59. Howell was seventh in 1:03.03 and Lyndsay Nygren eighth in 1:03.06.
Lyndsay Ratasiewicz and Katie Butler were the only two first-place winners on Friday. Ratasiewicz won the 3000m in 11:03.70 while Butler captured the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 1 ¾ inches. Wentz was third with a height of 4-11 ¾.
Wentz also finished runner-up in the 55m hurdles in 9.12 seconds. C.J. Jacob was third in 9.17 while Butler was fifth in 9.45. Miriam Hughes was third in the triple jump with a distance of 33-6 ¾.
Liz Jackson was second in the shot put with a distance of 35-6.
West Chester’s women will be back in action next weekend at the Bucknell Heptagonal in Lewisburg, Pa. on Friday and Saturday.
