Cavalier Invitational Final Results
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –. West Chester University’s men’s swimming team qualified three individuals and one relay as the Golden Rams placed second overall in the team standings with 685 points at the Aquatics and Fitness Center Saturday night.
Host Virginia won the meet with 1,561 points. Washington & Lee was third behind West Chester with 587 points followed by American (245 points).
The meet featured a championship-style format with prelims for each event in the mornings and finals at 6 p.m.
Max Bernardes qualified for the 2010 NCAA Division II Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 15:53.37 that placed him fifth overall. He had already qualified for nationals in both the 500 free on Thursday and the 400 individual medley Friday. Bernardes also led off the 800 free relay Friday night that qualified for nationals.
West Chester qualified two of the five relays as both the 400 and 800 free relay squads hit their marks over the weekend. Tommy Rhoads, Kevin McCormick, Josh Pauley and Brendan Fanslau teamed up in the 400 free relay in the final event of the weekend to clock a time of 3 minutes, 7.29 seconds.
The 200 butterfly was an especially pleasing event for the Golden Rams Saturday as two swimmers hit ‘A’ qualifying times. McCormick placed third with a time of 1:51.89 while David Smoker was right behind in fourth touching out in 1:52.12.
Peter Madueno was a ‘B’ qualifier in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:08.26. Fanslau was a ‘B’ qualifier in the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.94.
A totaled, West Chester qualified two relays and six individuals this weekend.
The Golden Rams are off until January 15-16 when they travel to Trenton, N.J., for a tri-meet with Johns Hopkins and The College of New Jersey.
