Thursday Meet Results
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Jackie Borkowski hit one individual qualifying time and led off two relays, which also qualified for nationals as West Chester’s women’s swimming squad opened day one of the Cavalier Invitational with an excellent performance at the Aquatics and Fitness Center on the campus of the University of Virginia Thursday.
The meet features a championship-style format with prelims for each event beginning at 11 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. On Saturday, prelims begin at 10 a.m. with finals at 5 p.m. Live results will be linked on www.wcupagoldenrams.com as well as Virginia’s official athletic web site.
Borkowksi swam the 50-yard freestyle in 23.39 seconds to qualify for the 2009-10 NCAA Division II Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships next March. She also led off the lead leg of the 200 free relay, which placed fourth with a qualifying time of 1:35.98, and the 400 medley relay, which recorded a fifth-place finish in 3:53.35. Leah Varvaro, Jillian Murphy and Megan Bauer were the other three members of the 200 free relay. Rachael Gale, Erin Fischer and Kristen Montello teamed up with Borkowski in the 400 medley relay.
The 200 free relay and 400 medley relay were both strong events for the women on Thursday. West Chester’s team of Christie Stern, Tori Shearer, Gale and Fischer placed sixth in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:39.46. Dani Scott, Chelsea Perugini, Murphy and Bauer were also sixth in the 400 medley relay.
Danielle Ierley placed 11th in the 500 free, but hit a ‘B’ time in the event by touching out in 5:03.93. She was the only other Golden Rams swimmer to hit an ‘A’ or ‘B’ qualifying time for nationals.
Day two of the Cavalier Invitational will see the prelims and finals for the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 free, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and the 800 free relay.
Joining the Golden Rams and host Virginia at the UVA Invitational this weekend will be the Kansas women, and both the men's and women's teams from Washington & Lee and American University.
